THIS IS WHERE THE HOT FISHING IS!

There are an insane amount of salmon just offshore here in Astoria.  Limits come very easily and we try to take the larger fish unless they are deep hooked and bleeding.  Fished yesterday and limited with eight Silvers. On the way in weP8080005 pulled three crab traps and collected 36 keepers. Below is a very kind endorsement from my customers this week

Ed,

On Behalf of Rafael and myself, thank you for a great rip and a wonderful experience. As always your expertise was fully appreciated. The other clients you had on board were not as thrilled as we were. They just do not understand what it is like with other guides. We will always return.

Thank you

Russ Goddard

Fishing across the Columbia River Bar remains hot for feisty Coho’s but few Chinook’s are showing up in the catch.  fished north of the bar yesterday and had limits of silvers and was back in port by noon.  Pulled three crab traps on the south side of the jetty and had 24 keepers after picking through the soft shelled males.  Ocean remains calm however the motion of the ocean got to some of my customers yesterday.  Few anglers fishing the river as yet although I have heard of a few Chinook being taken. More on this subject later in the week.

Check out these NEW and EXISTING FEE INCREASES  that our governor and legislature has levied on us here in Oregon.  During the worst economic crisis since the great depression when Oregon is second only to Michigan in unemployment our legislators chose to take the, “tax and spend” route.  If this is all it takes to govern maybe some of  amateurs  should hold office.  Seems their justification for the increase is the fact they haven’t had an increase since 2004.  Please comment if you agree or dis-agree

Duckman, son and grandson

Duckman, son and grandson

These fish are the result of the extended keeper sturgeon season in Astoria in mid July of this year.  This 13 year old, Chris, caught his first fish over 12 inches which was an oversize in the 6 foot range.  Needless to say he was all business.  His guide kept reminding him not to let go of the rod and I am happy to say he had a death grip on it until the hook was removed and the fish swam away.  Strange to me that young Chris didn’t catch the smallest fish but he wound up holding the smallest one for the photo.

My business is founded on the premise that I want to introduce fishing to kids just like a kind old gentleman did to me when I was eight years old.  Therefore all parents are encouraged to bring their preteen kids fishing for no extra charge.  However, please only one child for each paying adult.

Cool day on the Columbia

Cool day on the Columbia

Spring Chinook fishing here in Oregon was by all measurements a complete wipe out this year. The  constant manulipation by the Department of fish and Wildlife on the days we were allowed to fish and the late arrival of the run made our business very difficult.  But that is another story I will get into at a later date.  Here however are a couple fish taken on a very cold windy day in the Portland area.

Although fishing in the Columbia this summer wasn’t the slam dunk we have become so accustomed to we did have some good days. Pictured above are a couple of those days.
But now I am ready to move from bottom feeders to some Chinook Salmon fishing and that is coming up mid August. Hope to hear from you loyal clients and spend a day on the river with you.

Steelhead of a lifetime

Steelhead of a lifetime

Fishing for this young angler on the Clackamas River in early June produced this Chrome bright Steelhead buck. Better yet this is a 20 pound fish! Note the smile.

Once again it is time to fish for winter Steelhead here in the Portland area. My season generally starts Christmas week if the river is fishable. Again this year I will side drift eggs from my sled. This has proven to be the most effective method for these fish. For those of you that aren’t familiar with this technique the boat slides down river with the current and you drift your bait off the side of the boat. This technique requires ultra light gear and thus the thrill for this kind of fishing. I use G-Loomis nine foot spinning rods with Shimano spinning reels. Ten pound mainline and eight pound terminal leader. we catch hatchery Steelhead,

Not a bad way to end the season in tillamook. The Wilson River is putting out some Chrome fish here in Tillamook but is dropping and clearing fast. No rain in the forcast for some time so its time to fold my tent and go home. Slow season some say but there were some good days also. Thanksgiving is coming so I will go to Astoria and harvest some delicious Dungness crab.
Kwik Fish from Wilson River

Kwik Fish from Wilson River

As predicted when the rain comes so will the fish. Went up the Wilson today and anchored up and put out some Kwik fish and went 5 for 7. Hopefully the rivers won’t blow out an in the next few days so we can intercept a few more of these fish. Most guides and sports have folded their tents and gone home. To bad they are missing out on this action.
